EXPOSE OF A FASHION SNOB: SABA KEY PIECES
Now, I need to get something straight. I am not a fashionista, never have been, never will be. Admitting this as a Melbournite so close to the start of the Loreal Melbourne Fashion Festival, is almost as bad as telling a football fanatic during grand final time, that I don’t follow football. “What? You live in Melbourne, and you don’t follow football?! Why not??!!” … and it’s usually the females that have the hardest time coming to terms with my aversion to the AFL. What can I say, ball sports, or any kind of sports just aren’t my thing. If I can’t wear my heels or pretty flats, you can be pretty sure that I won’t be involved.
I’ve always had a clear defined sense of my own style – I know exactly what I do like, and what I don’t like – and one thing is for sure, I don’t follow trends. I’m not a fashion snob (well, perhaps I am), I just don’t believe in wearing something, just because it’s in fashion regardless of whether I like it or not. That’s not to say that I don’t fall for pieces that fashion introduce each season, or get excited seeing new season ranges, but I’m definitely not going to buy something because Vogue tells me I must. I must confess, I am usually that person who ends up buying a maxi dress three seasons after it first came in, because it has finally grown on me.
My style is classic. I am of the adage, that one can ever have too many turtle necks, Country Road tanks, trench coats or knee high leather boots. I love the floatiness of linen in summer, and how it sits on the body with elegance and ease; and the strength of cashmere and wool in winter, providing form and structure to silhouettes. I also love fun too – and nothing can take the edge off seriousness, like a bit of sparkle (but please, keep your bedazzlers locked up where they belong).
The mere thought of polyester makes me want to break out into hives, and I am always checking labels to avoid an attack. I only have to walk past a Payless shoe store, and the smell of faux leather makes me want to dry reach. Yes, I am a quality girl through and through.
If there is one label that encapsulates my style, it is Max Mara.
So, as a self professed non fashionista, why I am writing about fashion? It’s because, if I have to spend hours searching for a classic black A Line skirt, and returning home with nothing but blisters, there are surely others out there who are too. It’s time to get savvy. Until such time I can afford to swan into Max Mara for my new seasonal wardrobe, I’m hitting the internet before I hit the pavement.
My Key Pieces From Saba
Every year, I patiently wait for Saba’s long black wool wrap cardigans and ponchos. I then spend the season lusting after them, and by the time I decide that I can go without food for a week, to fund said purchase, they have already sold out. Not this year Saba, not this year – it’s you, me and your woollen wraps. Oh, and these are pretty lovely too.
