NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF A GOOD HAIR DAY
I have always believed in the adage that the quality of your life is directly affected by the quality of your hair - but what do you do when you have unruly hair that refuses to take orders, misbehaves and continually erupts into chaos? My good hair days have always been a mysterious occurrence that happen whenever they bloody well please thank you very much.
For years I have struggled with my chaotic, frizzy and flyaway hair terrorising my psyche and sabotaging any real chance of happiness. The elusive good hair day has continually taunted me, mocking me with its elusiveness. Na, na, na – you can try and ply me with much product as you like, but you’ll never get the wash and wear hair you dream of with those curls.
I have always considered my hair an extension of myself, but now I see it has its own life and a personality all of its own. Defiant and stubborn, it’s only ever going to do what it damn well likes. So, it’s time to start treating it like the naughty child that needs structure that it is. No more begging, pleading or trying to coerce it do things it clearly has no interest in doing – it’s time to take a hard line. I’m taking control of my hair with a straightener and a strict routine.
When I straighten my hair (let’s call my hair Sally) with my straightener, she is much more well behaved. No arguments, no protesting and no crying – she stays put, exactly where she is meant to. In fact if I give her some leave in treatment and serum before I straighten her out, she will look pretty and stay well behaved for a good 3 days.
After I wash my straightened hair, Sally loves it when I give her a deep conditioning treatment. Because she has been so good, I also lavish her with leave in conditioning sprays and let her run free for the day. However, I mustn’t let her rest on her laurels and risk having to send her to the corner for getting all out of control again, so I wash her the very next day and straighten her back out.
I have never been the high maintenance or structured type, but 20 to 30 minutes with my straightener twice a week is a worthwhile investment for my psychological well being. It’s not much to ensure that I feel nothing less than fabulous when I step out my door and when I consider the confidence it instills in me – because let me tell you, I can do anything with good hair.

I have very unruly curly hair too, and after a few months of training I have gotten to the point where I only need to wash my hair once every 4 or 5 days without it getting dirty or greasy (this doesn’t count if I go to the gym). If I wash with a clarifying shampoo then use a deep conditioning treatment then straighten her out I get a good 4 days use out of her. Last week I got 6 days without being greasy or dirty. I used to wash and straighten my hair EVERY day, and I swear if I had have gone on much longer like that it would have fallen out.
Here’s to good hair days!
I will try the Remington wet to straight now, I’ll keep you posted on the results!!!
Tilly, 6 days – wow, you are a bit of a legend in my book! If you are nervous about using the wet to straight when your hair is wet, it is still brilliant on dry hair. I am yet to master curling my hair with a straightening iron (rather ironic to straighten curly hair and then curl it – but it’s all about the definition), but am going to give it a go on about day 3 … might be a fab way of extending the style before I have to wash it out again. Yours in good hair days
