I used to be high maintenance. On the beauty front that is.

• Nails always polished to perfection
• Hair immaculately groomed at all times
• Religiously rubbed every cream known to womankind on my body to combat cellulite, stretch marks and sagging skin
• Fake tanned to kingdom come
• Scoured the internet for hours for the latest wrinkle creams
• Cleansed, toned and moisturised along with serums, masks, exfoliators and anything else I could get my manicured hands on
• Weekly pedicures for baby soft feet
• Never left home unless I looked like a vintage movie star, even if I was just going to do the groceries

And I loved it. Every god damn single second of it. But then something happened.

Life got in the way.

No longer did I have the energy and exuberance for being a beauty product whore. My hair got frizzy, my nails started sporting chipped polish, and my lily white skin was there for all to be blinded by. Audrey Hepburn would roll in her grave.

But then I got smart. I realised that I could embrace a new ‘beauty regime me’, and so effortless elegance was born. Channeling Audrey, by taking care of the basics, so the rest takes care of itself.

My friend {let’s call her M} has this down to a fine art. She always looks immaculate, like she’s spent hours in front of the mirror every morning, but in fact, she confesses when she puts on her make up, it’s all slap, slap, slap and good to go. But that’s because she takes such good care of the details.

This isn’t about letting go completely. Because frizzy hair is going to need some care and your nails some attention, but what it is about is taking on a more minimal approach to beauty, whilst maximising the results. And let it be known, I’ll still always love getting in my boudoir and applying false eyelashes and glamming it up for a special occasion.

Prep & Prime. Your skin needs to be in tip top condition before you even think about taking beauty slap anywhere near it. Moisturised skin will also act as a magnet for your foundation. MWSG recommends Gatineau’s Nourishing Day Cream.

Radiate. To create a luminous glow for the cameras, apply a radiance mask before your make up and then mix some illuminator in with your foundation. MWSG recommends Gatineau’s Anti-Wrinkle Radiance Mask.

Define. It’s all about definition for the eyes, and a perfect line across your top lid is a must to make your smokey eye pop. MWSG recommends Benefit’s Magic Ink Jet-Black Liquid Liner.

Emphasise. If you can’t apply falsies without stabbing yourself in the eye with your tweezers, then you’ll need a hard working mascara that creates lashings of volume. Dior’s New Look Mascara is a game changer.

Perfect your pout. Nothing screams drama and glamour like red lipstick. Whilst it’s high maintenance, it’s fabulously worth it. MWSG recommends Estee Lauder’s Hydra Lustre Signature Lipstick in Divine Red.

Polish. Pay attention to the little details and the rest will take care of itself. Manicured nails and conditioned cuticles are an absolute must. MWSG recommends OPI’s Pink Aphrodite.

Volume! Forget super straight locks and think big, bouncy hair. Pump up the volume with mousse (yes, mousse! Zoe Foster swears by it) prior to blow drying. MWSG recommends Sebastian’s new Whipped Creme.

At the moment, I’ve fallen head over my manolos for romancing my everyday. Think lighting candles, beautiful soaps in the shower and having flowers on my desk. And if there’s one love I’ve got a particular affection for, it’s MOR Cosmetics. My darling hairdresser is currently weeping into her weeties and sobbing into her sauvignon blanc after I did the unthinkable. I dyed my hair with supermarket packet colour. Needless to say, its left my hair like straw so I’ve needed some serious moisture to return my locks to their former glory.

Hello KMS Moisture Therapy. With each shampoo my hair not only felt thoroughly cleansed, but also soft – and that’s even before I lovingly tended to it with the treatment. PLUMP UP THE VOLUME WITH REVLON

If you were to ask me the classic desert island question, I’d struggle to whittle down my list to three items. Lip gloss, SPF, fake tan and bikinis would all vie for my attention, but there’s one product I could definitely not live without when stranded on a remote island in the Bahamas (well, I’m hoping my raft would end up there in such case I ever found myself navigating perilous waters). And that’s mascara.

So as a mascara afficionado, I’ve been trialling two of Revlon’s latest mascaras to hit the market. Grow Luscious Plumping Mascara does everything its name suggests. It’s as though they curl and grow before my very eyes (try it one eye and see the difference for yourself). Not only that, they appear voluptuously volumised. Thick and long. We like that.

Revlon’s Custom Eyes provides your peepers with two different options, all in one trusty wand. Twist the cap in one direction for length and definition, and twist the other way for length and drama. Considering the limited space when your cosmetics are jossling for a space in your handbag, this is a multi purpose mascara that is not only functional, but also fabulous.

DERMALOGICA

You know you’re onto a good thing when your BF asks, “What was that you used in the shower? That smells really nice”. “Oh, that’s my Dermalogica exfoliating body scrub darling- it’s the business, isn’t it?”

Infused with lavender, sandalwood, orange and rosemary, it’s the perfect start to my day to energise my senses (remember how I was banging on before about not being a morning person?). As always, this Dermalogica product is ever so kind to my skin, exfoliating and smoothing it without scratching or harming it. That’s thanks to super fine olive, date seed and fruit fig powders. Not only is it a divine way to start your day, it’s also fabulous for preparing your skin for fake tan.

Whilst we’re on the subject, if you have delicate skin like me you’ll also have trouble with harsh exfoliators on your face. Which is why I’m declaring my unadulterated affection for Dermalogica’s Gentle Cream Exfoliant. It contains non-abrasive hydroxy acids, which means there’s no harsh nut shells to damage your complexion. More like a face mask, you lovingly lavish your skin with this cream and after ten minutes you wash it off, and hey presto, it removes dull skin and dead skin cells to reveal a fresh new face.

As a former beauty editor of another magazine, and firm believer in the quality of your life being dictated by the quality of your hair, it won’t come as any surprise that I’m a tough crowd when it comes to wholeheartedly placing my trust in a hairdresser. But I wasn’t left with much choice upon running down Sydney Road in Brunswick whilst hyperventilating into a brown paper bag in search of a hairdresser who could tame my tresses prior to a television debut. Enter Sara Jade Hairdressing. It was a decision I wasn’t to regret.

Of course, in the midst of said crisis I had my friends on speed dial who all reassured me that Audrey Hepburn was on my side. When it comes to styling yourself for a cocktail hour, there’s no better cue than the screen sirens of yesteryear. They screamed glamour, sass and sophistication, and they turned beauty into an art form.

These women knew that what you do is as important as what you don’t do. And pssst, your secret weapon involves not only bonding with your beautician and hairdresser on a chummy first name basis, but also ensuring you never leave home without essential beauty items in your handbag.

Take a little bit of inspiration from these iconic women and you’ll look and feel the part:

LOUISE BROOKS, 1920s

“A well dressed woman, even though her purse is painfully empty, can conquer the world.”

• To recreate Louise’s 1920s vamp look, dark lips and nails are a must. Try Ruby Woo lipstick from MAC and paint your nails in Got the Blues from Red, or Lincoln Park after Dark by OPI.
• A grey smokey eye with lashings of eyeliner in the waterline is essential.  This is one situation where I advocate breaking makeup 101 rule: thou must not wear a strong eye and lip together.
• If you don’t have a bob, try finger waves (think Charlize Theron on the red carpet). You’re going to need bobby pins and gel – lots of it. Or, add an art-deco style hair pin.
• Scent yourself with the hypnotic Poison by Dior, it’s a heady and sensual fragrance that will create an air of mystery.

Louise says…

• Do carry lipstick and a mirror in your handbag to perfect your pout all evening long, especially if you’re wearing signature vintage red. It’s high maintenance but fabulously worth it.
• Don’t leave home without a spare pair of pantyhose in case of an emergency ladder in your fishnet.

MAE WEST, 1930s

“I’ve been in more laps than a napkin.”

• Try pin curls to emulate Mae’s soft and bouncy curls. You’ll need to arm yourself with lots of bobby pins and a curl setting spray. Alas, donot fret, this is easier than it sounds.
• Start by taking small strands of hair, then wind them in on themselves to create a flat circle on your head, then pin them down. The bigger the loop, the bigger the curl. Roll all your hair in the same way, making sure you spray each strand with a curl setting spray before pinning. Once complete, wrap your hair in a fabulous scarf, pour yourself a cocktail and relax for a few hours while your curls set.
• Makeup in the ’30s was personified by an uber pale complexion, pink blush and the rosebud lip – think full lips with an elongated bow that rounds at the corners.

Mae says …

• Do ask your manicurist to apply your polish in a half moon crescent in the centre of the nails with the tips and base of the nails left bare – an edgy, modern take on the ‘30s polish technique.
• Don’t pluck your eyebrows into a thin line of non-existence. This look needs to be left in the past as it’s not flattering on any woman.

VERONICA LAKE, 1940s

 “I’m no longer interested in doing what’s expected of me.”

• Veronica’s wave of cascading side curls were her trademark. Emulate her look by placing curlers in your hair and once set, take them out and soften them by brushing with a large paddle brush. If you don’t have a set of curlers, learn how to wield a ghd styler to create waves, and then pin one side of your hair back with bobby pins.
• Lacquer your nails with An Affair in Red Square by OPI, and, oh, it’s still all about the red lip. Ensure you find the right red for your complexion: blue based red for cool complexions and an orange based red for warm complexions.
• Line your eyelid with a thin line of liquid black eyeliner. Bobbi Brown’s gel liner will ensure a long lasting and super defined line, sans smudging.
• Scent yourself with the opulent and floral Gucci Guilty Intense perfume.

Veronica says…

• Do invest in a Borne Naked handbag liner for the perfect solution to take your handbag necessities from one cocktail hour to another.
• Don’t take your heels off no matter how many martinis you’ve had! Shoes are not an optional item in public. Ever!

You could say I travel a lot. In the past three weeks, I’ve been on a plane six times (it’s part of the territory being a travel writer) which has required Lara Croft stealth like suitcase and handbag organisation. Three different suitcases – some containing false eyelashes and heels, the others fake tan and bikinis.

With the help of Zoe Foster, the uber gorgeous author of “Amazing Face” and other fabulous books, I have decided to get my make bags in order, to ensure that I won’t ever again be hurtling from one destination to the next in a complete state of dishevelment.

In the Essentials section of her book, Zoe details all the things you need for your different make up bags. Here’s my list to ensure you never again have to rummage through your hand bag desperately searching for lip gloss, coming up for air with a handful of mintie wrappers, receipts and ahem, tampons (no taxi drivers won’t accept them in lieu of payment).

Peeps, this concealer is the bomb. Its smooth and creamy texture covers just about everything. Pimples, redness and under-eye circles be gone!

Benefit They’re Real Mascara

This mascara sure does pack a punch and is perfect in lieu of false eyelashes, especially if you need to take your day look into the evening after a long day at the office or on the fly.

MOR Cosmetics Lip Macaron

This wins massive handbag points as it’s in a tin and won’t leak gooey, sticky, lacquery, icky stuff throughout the contents of your bag. 

Clinique Happy 

This fresh fragrance bursting with citrus is the perfect all around perfume for day or night and it also comes in a convenient smaller size. My handbag says hurrah!

CLINIQUE Blushwear Cream Stick

As we’re looking for prods we can use on the go, this cream blush is perfect with it’s cream to powder finish – enabling you to apply your blush without a brush, nor get it all over your fingers, or, ahem, down the front of your brand spanking new Country Road suit whilst applying it on the train.

Bobbi Brown Tinted Moisturiser

Tinted Moisturiser is the fo shiz for a touch up when you haven’t got time to fully blend your foundation. Of course, make sure like this Bobbi Brown formula, it contains SPF.

Napoleon Lipstick

If you have to pick one lipstick colour, I think pink is flattering on every woman. You could also squeeze in a red for a bit of va-va-voom at night- but remember red lipstick is a commitment and can’t be haphazardly applied, so you could apply your gloss over your pink lippie instead. Voila!

Cedel Extra Firm Hairspray

Fight the dreaded frizzies and fly-aways with this super convenient travel size hairspray. It’s perfect for touch ups on the go, and is easily brushed out and doesn’t build up on your hair (we like that). Don’t forget to throw in some bobby pins, hair elastics and a small comb.

I also recommend that at all times every woman carries a packet of travel size tissues and emergency tampons in her handbag – need I elaborate on the consequences of such organisational mishap?

We’re talking the full arsenal here. So you’re going to need all of the above in your bathroom draw (so yes, do double up at sale time), plus the below. I may be a minimalist when it comes to my surroundings, but when it comes to my make up collection I am more extravagant with lipstick than Imelda was with shoes (as Patsy would say, “you can never have too may hats, gloves and shoes”), resulting in me having to shove the doors closed on my bathroom cabinets like a traveler sitting on their suitcase post a year’s “working” holiday. However, here is the bare minimum you should have in your bathroom cabinet.

Dermalogica Skin Resurfacing Cleanser

Cleanser and exfoliator in one? Oh oui, oui. Containing lactic acid, it promotes cell renewal (we do love those little cells turning over) and reveals smoother and more even skin. Sold.

Dermalogica Dynamic Skin Recovery

This is a lightweight yet highly effective day moisturiser with SPF 30+ has peptides that shake their pom poms for collagen production and primrose oil to prevent dehydration. Definitely a winner.

Cosmedix Refine Refining Treatment

This night time serum (Zoe recommends you use all serums at night regardless) is power packed with a potent levels of Vitamin A (the super star of anti aging). It tricks old lady or aging skin into acting like virginal skin (the skin you had before you subjected it to the sun or ahem, smoking and drinking too much) by increasing cell turnover and smoothing your skin like a baby’s bottom. We’ll forgive this little trickster for duping our fine lines and wrinkles.

Napoleon Auto Pilot Primer

Some beauty experts argue whether primer is necessary, but I say, yes, darlings yes, please do prime. Not only will it help your foundation glide on better, it will give your foundation more staying power throughout the day. Case closed.

Pantene Pro-V Aqua Light Shampoo & Conditioner

I’ll be honest, I’ve never been a fan of Pantene and my hairdresser would threaten to chop off all my hair if she knew I was using it.  However, I must say I’m mighty impressed with the new Aqua Light range which has targeted the silicon concerns of its older sister. If you need evidence, well here’s a snap shot of moi at Barney Martin Hairdressing post my hair being washed and conditioned with Pantene’s new formula. It’s all about the bounce.

I now keep 3 make up bags (one for toiletries, one for make up and one for the plane) packed in my suitcase at all times, and when I return from holidays I replace it all, so should I need to swan about in Monaco at a moment’s notice, I can spend more time on picking out my kaftans and deciding on which colour bikinis to take.

Toiletries Bag

Shampoo, conditioner – oh, no, not on your nellie am I going to leave this in the hands of the hotel! Have you seen my high maintenance hair? Sure, you can buy the travel size versions of your favourite shampoo and conditioner, but prepare to fork out for these ridiculously small containers of product. Borne Naked Travel Liners to the rescue!

These fabulous make up bags have all the cutest little containers you need to decant your hair care, moisturiser, serums, body moisturiser, exfoliator and the rest of your beauty slap.  Best of all the bags are clear so you can see exactly what is in them without having to rummage.

I also advise you add deodorant, SPF 30+ and a razor. If you’re not a waxer like me, then finding a razor to use on a daily basis that doesn’t scratch your legs to buggery leaving you with a rather “attractive” red mottled look is no easy task. Cosmetics

Shitika Anand has a very flashy certificate in her drawer that reads “Bachelors of Journalism – with distinction”. Sure, we all know that most all photos in cosmetic campaigns are photoshopped beyond belief, but when I see Cate, I believe her results are real. As a devotee of a mani and pedi, but loather of false nails (I love the polished look, but my nails spent a year in post traumatic stress after a 6 week stint of acrylics), I prefer to have my nails naturally painted on a weekly basis – in shades of OPI of course. Although it takes longer than my weekly mani (especially when my manicurist does my nails whislt my pedicurist does my feet, leaving me feeling like the Queen of Sheba – only thing missing is the waving of palms and being hand fed grapes) it’s still quicker than acryclics (around 30 minutes), and the wait is definitely worth the result. In the midst of any emotional crisis, besides having my psychic on speed dial, you will find me knee deep in as many products as I can get my hands on.  Moisturisers, face masks, serums, you name them, I love them all – the fancier and prettier the packaging, the better. I am a marketer’s dream. I believe all the claims on the labels, that retinol will vanish my wrinkles and the peptide formula will take years off my face, because, well, I want to.  False prophets perhaps, but products are my religion and my faith is unwavering.

As you may have gathered, I have a thing for beauty products. I call it passion, but others would describe it more in a 12 steps kind of way – yes, my name is Gaynor. Besides being toppled every time I open my bathroom cabinet, I can’t walk past a shop without having a massive argument with myself about why I don’t need any more product and why I should stay the hell out of there. This even includes petrol stations – if there is some kind of beauty product in a shop, my radar tracks it down and I must investigate, even if it’s just a chapstick. I’ll even buy cars and trucks weekly if it has a free mascara attached to it.

The gates of heaven open and I’m blinded by the gleaming halos of the products on the shelves. The holy houses of Chanel and Dior are my dealers and the ladies in the white coats behind their counters my pimps. “Pssst over here, I have a new wrinkle cream that is better than botox that will take ten years off your face”.  Considering my ten people hold me down rampant fear of needles, this is rather enticing indeed. Forgive me Lord, for I have sinned and moments later I’m lifting the lid off an outrageously priced little jar and it’s delivering its penance to my manicured hands. Forget Ten Hail Mary’s, give me the holy houses of Chanel any day.

Whilst wrestling with my conscience (hoping the part responsible for my finances will save me from doing serious damage to my credit card), I have an out of body experience and suddenly find myself being seduced by these women peddling their creams, lotions and potions. How on earth had I lived without it all this time? Like a woman possessed, I no longer cared how I would pay the month’s rent or what I would be eating, this product was going to change my life, and I had to have it. I don’t care that I will need to pawn all my belongings on ebay to pay for it, I’m vulnerable and I will pay anything, anything to make me feel better about my wrinkles.

When times are tough, and I’ve racked up more credit on my card than the US national debt, I have a little game I like to play. I don’t do sports as a general rule (if I can’t wear my heels then I’m not interested), however there’s one sport of which I’m a huge contender – yielding free make up samples from Cosmetic Counter Nazis who have no intentions of giving them to me.  No matter how rich I become, I will never time of this game, with its never ending tactics rendering it a new Olympic sport.

On your marks, get ready, get set, go!  I’m off the starting block and veering around the corner of Estee Lauder, passing Elizabeth Arden and reaching my target at the La Prairie counter in record time.  I approach the counter with the anticipation of setting a new personal best thick in the air. “I’ve been using Chanel for some time, but I’m now perusing the store for a complete new range”.  I hold my breath as I await the outcome of this stellar move on my opponent and psyche myself up for the obligatory twenty minutes detailing the science behind every product tested at their Swiss laboratories.

After displaying a keen interest in three of her most expensive products, I execute my final play for the day, inquiring about prices to cement my masquerade as a bona fide purchaser.  “I’d like to buy these three products but as my skin is sensitive I’d like to trial them at home before I buy.  Do you have some samples I could try?”

The game hangs precariously in the balance as I nervously await the final result. It’s been a great performance from Alder today, but has she done enough to bring home the gold? Moments later, the crowd roars in triumph as I’m handed a bag of their finest creams.

A little known fact is that I used to work at the La Mer counter in David Jones. Whilst women would fork out hundreds of dollars for the “miracle”, the packaging was far from being a display item. Perhaps it’s just the Libran in me, but if I’m going to pay for quality skincare, not only do I want it to work miracles, I also want it to look pretty on my bathroom counter – and these products from Dior certainly do deliver in both respects.

I have always been a fan of lathering a serum on my face to help boost the effectiveness of my moisturiser, but I find that the strength of the serum means that it can stand alone when I am in a rush in the morning. I am not a morning person. Never have been. Never will be. As such, I rush out my door having spent barely 15 minutes in the shower and getting dressed.

This means my make up for work is done in under 5 minutes on the train, transforming my face from just got out of bed, please don’t talk to me for another good 2 hours, to bright, perky and ready for action. But the real heroes of this story are the products that make all this possible, because yes, not all mascaras are created equal.

So, here’s my five minute (or actually much less for sleep deprived, do anything for an extra ten minutes sleep pros like myself) make up application guide to have you presentable for the community at large.

Step 1

Cleanse skin in shower with Dermalogica Microfoliant. Now, technically, this isn’t a cleanser persae, but remember we are talking cutting corners here in the name of hugging your doona longer. However, I’ve found that a cleanser really isn’t necessary when you wash this over your face. Less than 30 seconds later, I not only step out of the shower smelling like daisies, I have skin that is sparkling clean and ready to face the day.

Step 2

Okay, so by now, you’ve rummaged around your laundry baskets for clean clothes and knickers, and have managed to make it out the door in time for your train. Once on said train, it’s time to whip out your trusty make up bag. I do hope you’re reaching inside it for your Illamasqua Primer. Yes, we are talking make up in minutes here, so you may be wondering why I’m advocating primer? Well, if we’re going for quick yet effective, primer is a must to ensure your make up stays on as long as possible.

Step 3

Since we’re time poor, I suggest you mix some Illamasqua Gleam Cream in with your foundation to brighten your complexion whilst also smoothing out any imperfections. In terms of foundation, I do love Clinique Dewy Smooth Anti Aging foundation which has a natural yet, and as its name suggests dewy coverage, and also the Dermalogica Tinted Moisturiser if I am in a real, oh, my god, I am going to be late for work rush.

Step 4

I think we’re ready for some eye shadow, don’t you think? All that blending and contouring of a smokey eye is fine on a Saturday night when you have the time to wait for the glue on your false eyelashes to dry, but what we’re looking for here is something we can quickly sweep over our eyes. Hello Bobbi Brown cream eyeshadow (which come in matt and shimmer). Yes, I’m talking fingers here, but just make sure you have a tissue at the ready to wipe them clean, so you don’t smear product all over your brand spanking new Country Road suit (ahem, not that I’ve done anything like that myself).

Step 5

It’s time to really open up those eyes. We’re looking for a mascara that packs a punch and gives you va va voom lashes in seconds. Hello Lancome Hypnose Mascara. Make sure you tilt back your head to ensure you don’t get mascara over your eye lids, before zig zagging the brush from the very roots of your lashes right to the ends. One coat of Lancome of Hypnose is all you need. There’s a reason it has such a cult following.

Step 6

Line your lips with Gorgeous Cosmetics lip liner in nude and matching lipstick and your lips are taken care of quicker than you can say, when’s the next train to the city?

Step 7

Universal law 1.1, never leave home without gloss. I have quite a few favourites in the gloss department, but lately I’ve been taken by Napoleon Love Bite Lip Plump. Gloss will take your minimal look from simple to special in seconds.

Step 8

Q: Why are you leaving the Beauty Department? I mean, seriously, why would you give up all the perks of being a Beauty Editor?

A: Yes, it was a long, hard and well thought out decision. I feel that I’ve established the Beauty Department and built it up to what it is now, and now I’m looking for a new challenge.

I also have two fabulous writers within the department who I would love to see progress in their careers, so me stepping up and out, provides them the opportunity to develop and inject their talent, writing nous and personalities into the department.

Additionally, I will continue to review beauty treatments around the country as part of my travel writing with Onya, and I also have a regular beauty feature on my blog ‘Beauty News From My Boudoir’ on The Modern

Woman’s Survival Guide, so do not fear, I will still be knee deep in beauty product on a daily basis.
